Printers Lingo explained part 1

platesToday marks the start of a new continuous blog series designed to help people understand some of the terms we use in print.

Today we are looking at what plates are.

In the offset litho process we use printing plates to transfer ink to a blanket to print the paper.

  • The plates are made of aluminium
  • Can only be used once
  • 100% recyclable
  • The plates come in different sizes for each printing press
  • One plate for each colour in CMYK
  • A usual total of 8 plates per printed section.

On Thursday we will be looking at what a blanket is.
